The knee is the largest joint in the body, and one of the most easily injured. It is made up of four main things: bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. Bones. Three bones meet to form your knee joint: your thighbone (femur), shinbone (tibia), and kneecap (patella). The knee joint is a bicondylar type synovial joint, which mainly allows for flexion and extension (and a small degree of medial and lateral rotation). It is formed by articulations between the patella, femur and tibia.
